About Calvin

An unrepentant renaissance man, Calvin hasn't quite figured out if he's a writer, a designer or more recently a photographer and videographer. If he isn't driving one of his classic cars or riding his mountain bike, he can be found punching words into his laptop for Carshop.co.za.

Proton X50 Review Proton X50 Review – 1.5T Executive: We Were Not Expecting This

 Calvin Fisher

---

With a fairly contrived genealogy we were expecting a car equally as muddled. Imagine our surprise, upon delivery of the Proton X50, finding a well-consolidated compact SUV. There's a lot to love here, and we suspect that the Proton has what it takes to do the distance, literally and figuratively in a soft roader-loving Mzansi...

BMW M340i xDrive Steptronic Review

 Calvin Fisher

---

The BMW M340i is the zenith of Bavarian performance shy of a full-blown M car. And unlike the coupe, the M440i, is bereft of that highly controversial front-end treatment – some hate it, others loathe it, and one or two think it will grow on them, presumably like a rash. Calvin Fisher claims it is great, but is it a ‘great for a million-rand car’?

Haval H2 Review Haval H2 Review: 1.5T Lux Auto

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has spent some quality time with the H2 – the compact crossover from Haval – that’s the higher-end badge from GWM. We've covered this in the past, the Chinese have done a great job in closing the gap between dire offerings of the past, and the likes of the Korean and Japanese rivals, certainly having caught up with the pacific rim.

New Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S New Metal: Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Targa is Porsche's semi-roofless iteration of their most famous sportscar. But what it gives up in practicality (it isn't quite 100% opened up) it gains in desirability. It's Stuttgart's 'party in the back, party in the front', ‘bite-the-back-of-your-hand’ gorgeous sliver of sports car/alfresco 911 experience, and we love it!

New 2020 Toyota Corolla Review Toyota Corolla Review: 2020 2.0 XR CVT Sedan – Wandering at Long Last Lust

 Calvin Fisher

---

Forgive the coat of dust on Calvin Fisher’s brand-new Toyota Corolla test car – it wears this proudly as evidence of a lockdown-enforced hibernation – much fresher, though, is the ink on his permit that allows him to finally work at last. And that means a 400km round trip from Cape Town to Gansbaai on some of the best driving roads. Anywhere.

VW Golf GTI TCR Launched in South Africa Flash Drive: VW Golf GTI TCR

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher attended the digital launch of the VW Golf GTI TCR. In his lounge, in his pajamas. So you don't have to. Can he tell us how it drives? No. Can he tell us what it feels like to sit in or what the interior feels like? No. It’s April 2020, we’re all still locked inside due to the Coronavirus pandemic and this is world we live in now.

Citroen C5 Aircross Review 24 Hours With the Citroen C5 Aircross 1.6T Shine

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher gets sentimental when discussing the new French loaf but with the national lockdown called into effect no less than the day after the C5 Aircross was delivered, time spent with it was, unfortunately, severely limited. He can say with confidence, though, that this is definitely the kind of car he’d like to drive when the world resumes.

Lamborghini Urus First Drive Review Carshop First Drive: Lamborghini Urus – The Lambolorian

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has a confession: he fully expected to not like the Lamborghini Urus – had the intention of casting it aside as an overpriced Audi. This is their first Super Sports Utility Vehicle – yes, the LM002 was a thing, but this, the Urus is a very different proposition. Did our intrepid author like it? Did he love it? Read on to find out…

Covid-19 SA Motoring Industry Here is The News, We've Gone Viral

 Calvin Fisher

---

Has the world gone mad? No, but it is quite sick, says Calvin Fisher. Covid-19 has evolved from punchline to proper problem, to worldwide pandemic. That's particularly scary in a world gone digital, where every nugget of information is broadcast online every few minutes. But what about us, the car afflicted, how does it affect you and me?

Suzuki S-Presso Launch Drive Carshop First drive: Suzuki S-Presso – Orange You glad?

 Calvin Fisher

---

I imagine that launching a new car right now must be hard, what with the pandemic and all. Four days of S-Presso launch with the nation's motoring media was soon replaced with a video premiere you could watch from the comfort of your own home. As for me, I was already in an S-Presso when the news broke, so I may as well drive it, right?

Lamborghini Huracan Evo Driven Driven: Lamborghini Huracan EVO – Ludicrous Speed

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher is grateful that lightning can indeed strike twice as he once again finds himself at the helm of a Lamborghini. The rather new Huracan Evo EVO. At R5.5million (sans options) sure, this it is dear. But it's the kind of car that well, if you have to ask, you probably can’t… Because you're not buying a car, you're buying an experience.

New Audi A1 40 TFSi Review New Audi A1 Review: 40 TFSI – Red is For Race

 Calvin Fisher

---

The previous Audi A1 was cute – whereas the brand spanking new red number we’ve been enjoying recently is edgier, sharper and comes with the throaty soundtrack you want from a hot hatch. Then there's the fact that we really like the Polo GTI. Speaking of, is the Audi A1 merely just a more expensive Polo GTI? We’ll let Calvin Fisher explain.

Car Spotting in New York City The Travelling Car Spotter

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher is a car spotter, but on a way more passive level - more of a mild car appreciationist perhaps. His favourite thing to do when visiting a new city is to look at the traffic. Referring to the composition, sheer makeup of the moving metal, and how it contrasts to what we have in Mzansi – every city having its own distinct flavour.

Volvo XC40 Review Volvo XC40 Review: T5 R-Design Geartronic AWD – The Swedest Thing

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher reviews, what he calls the Tom Hanks of motorcars – the Volvo XC40 in range-topping T5 R-Design trim – not because it's as white as Scandinavian snow, but because literally everybody likes this car. And while there is more valued found in cheaper models, the XC40 is the quintessential representation of the humblebrag, and that’s okay.

Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up S11 Auto Driven Carshop First Drive: Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up S11 Auto – Pik Up and Play

 Calvin Fisher

---

Their passenger SUV range includes the TUV300, XUV300, XUV100, XUV500, Scorpio and Thar. The Pik Up remains our favourite with close competition from the new kid on their block, the XUV300 which now has an entry-level diesel W4 model with steel wheels for a ridiculously low R234,999, excluding service plan.

Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR Meet the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR

 Calvin Fisher

---

Meet the Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR. As in Aviator? No, it in fact refers to Avatar, as in the James Cameron’s 2009 movie with the blue forest giants. Queue puzzled looks or perhaps knowing winks, what with the slew of Avatar sequels coming out ‘soon’. Either way, we’re struggling to see the need for a connection to a turn of the century sci-fi romp

Carlos Ghosn's Escape We Need to Talk About: The Curious Case of Carlos Ghosn

 Calvin Fisher

---

Sometimes news can be stranger than fiction, and in the curious case of Carlos Ghosn, his escape from justice is too odd to make up. We have no idea what the truth is but at this point it’s one part ‘Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?’ and two parts ‘Mr Bean’s Descent Into Chaos’. Either way, we’ll be sure to binge watch the Netflix adaptation.

Top Five Japanese Cars to Drive Top Five Japanese Cars to Drive Before You Die

 Calvin Fisher

---

At Carshop we're big fans of Japanese cars in general, their lightness and lightheartedness. We like the way they focus on driver enjoyment as opposed to being stoic, humourless and dare we say, a bit Teutonic. And that’s before you even get to the performance cars. Calvin Fisher deep dives into our classifieds to find five Japanese gems.

FCA PSA Merger We Need to Talk About: The Motoring Industry's Biggest Blended Family

 Calvin Fisher

---

We've long believed that in the years to come, there'll only be three or four car firms in total – titans that will monster up ailing manufacturers, with existing brands relegated to being little more than badges on different (but fundamentally identical) cars. With the FCA group and PSA group merging, what’s next? A Chinese-Indian mashup?

Top Trumps 2020 Edition Calvin Fisher Top Trumps 2020 Edition

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher reminisces about the good ‘ol days where Top Trumps was a card game rather than alluding to the world's 'most orange president'. The game was simple, played amongst two people or more with cards denoting line items such as engine displacement, cylinders, power, torque and price. Would it work in 2020? Calvin Fisher ponders…

Carshop's Best Cars of 2019 Carshop's Best of 2019: Part Two – The Gravel Travellers

 Calvin Fisher

---

2019 was an exceptional year for Mzansi's roads with several debutantes and stalwarts battling for dominance in their segments. But, and we've always said this, there's plenty of excellent metal that flies under the radar too. Rather than break it up into segments, these are simply the best off-road-based cars we've driven this year that stood out.

Carshop's Best Cars of 2019: Part One Carshop's Best of 2019: Part One – The Tarmac Specialists

 Calvin Fisher

---

2019 was an exceptional year for Mzansi's roads with several debutantes and stalwarts battling for dominance in their segments. But, and we've always said this, there's plenty of excellent metal that flies under the radar too. Rather than break it up into segments, these are simply the best onroad-based cars we've driven this year that stood out.

New Kia Sportage Review KIA Sportage Review: 2.0 EX Plus 2WD Auto CRDI – Happily Urban

 Calvin Fisher

---

On a recent work trip to the big smoke, Calvin Fisher had the pick of a few test cars for the four-day marathon of meetings and film shoots. The KIA Sportage enticed him immediately with its SUV stance and capacious, comfy living quarters. That it came with a frugal auto oil burner in the 2.0l CRDI couldn't be ignored either. So, how did he get on?

Ford Everest Bi-Turbo Review Ford Everest Review: 2.0 Bi-Turbo 4WD – Ford's White Good

 Calvin Fisher

---

The range-topping Everest is a bargain at its sub-R800k price if we’re fair, when you consider its extensive equipment list. You get a handsome, comfy SUV capable of carrying you and six passengers across almost every type of terrain, from asphalt and gravel to mountain side and top. What’s not to like? The Ford Everest makes all kinds of sense.

Isuzu mu-X Review Isuzu mu-X Review: 3.0 4x4 AT6 – Silver, But Not a Silverado

 Calvin Fisher

---

Isuzu's seven-seater SUV, the mu-X is effectually a follow up to the Frontier of the 90s. As such it's an excellent all-rounder with an array of standard active and passive safety features as well as its proper 4x4 system complete with low range. Can it sway customers away from a Fortuner, Everest or Pajero Sport? Calvin Fisher digs in to find out.

Calvin Fisher Loves the Tesla Cybertruck That Time The Tesla Cybertruck Broke Cyberspace

 Calvin Fisher

---

Can the Tesla Cybertruck evoke sensations and emotions in those who see it, the same way cars of yesteryear have? Of course, it can, but in an infinitely more polarizing fashion. Like Marmite on wheels, you either love it or hate it. Calvin Fisher is firmly in the ‘love’ camp and suggests adding Gatling guns as his only major edit. Let him explain…

VW T-Cross Review VW T-Cross Review: 1.0T DSG R-Line – Little Big Car

 Calvin Fisher

---

The VW T-Cross is already the company's third bestselling car in South Africa, so naturally, we thought we needed to take a closer look at what makes it such a success. Built to take on the likes of the Ford Ecosport, Hyundai Creta, and Mazda CX-3, the T-Cross is initially powered by a 1-litre, 3-cylinder engine, tested here in DSG R-Line Spec.

Hyundai Venue First Drive Review Carshop First Drive: Hyundai Venue

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has just driven the Hyundai Apartment… Sorry, we mean the Hyundai Venue, at its international launch right here in Mzansi. Okay, it has a silly name but according to the author, they’re going to sell like hotcakes. A direct rival to the VW T-Cross (and many others), the Venue has every right to feel confident in its challenge.

Kyalami 9 Hours by Calvin Fisher Things That Go Bump in The Night

 Calvin Fisher

---

This is not a minute by minute race report. By now you’ve read the results, you know who won, you know the mainstream stories and the drama (rain) surrounding the race. Rather, Calvin Fisher recounts the race from the perspective of a spectator and a man with a camera, standing next to the circuit, watching the cars battle for nine arduous hours.

Datsun GO CVT I Drove The Datsun GO CVT and Lived to Tell the Tale

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Datsun GO is NOT a death trap. The original launch car wasn’t either – but it was unsafe in 2016 where our roads are far more congested than they were 20 years ago – which is why the Datsun GO continues to be controversial. It’s also not alone in this arena (looking at you Renault KWID). Now with CVT gearbox, Calvin Fisher been driving it.

New Nissan Micra 1.0T Driven Carshop First Drive: Nissan Micra 1.0T Tekna Plus – A Mightier Micra

 Calvin Fisher

---

The big new here is that this ‘new’ Nissan Micra is equipped with a 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, good for 84kW and 180Nm over the standard 66kW/140Nm. This translates to a 9.9 second 0-100kph time – a significant improvement over the 12.1 of the standard model. Generally, Nissan Micra just got a little sportier (in a good way).

Ford Figo Titanium Review Ford Figo Hatch Review: 1.5 Titanium Manual – Compact Champ

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Ford Figo is an entry level B Segment tyke that plays in the cheaper air below the Fiesta, similar to what the VW Polo Vivo is to the Polo and the Renault Sandero is to the Clio. It loves (loves!) to rev its 1.5l petrol engine, and Calvin Fisher not being shy to flatten the loud pedal meant this pair got along quite well indeed.

New MINI Countryman JCW Driven Carshop First Drive: New MINI JCW ALL4 Countryman

 Calvin Fisher

---

We’d argue that MINIs small and large are peerless things and we live at a time where the JCW badge has been applied to all manners of MINI cars – and we don’t just mean size this time, but orientation – in this case a go-anywhere hot-hatch-cum-compact-SUV with that iconic British branding. And you can charge anything you bloody like for an icon.

New Hyundai Atos Driven Carshop First Drive: Hyundai Atos 1.1 Motion Manual

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher takes an awkward nostalgic first drive route (of that big cycle race that will not be named) in Hyundai’s new Atos. New might be stretching the meaning of the word but beyond that, the Atos weighs into a division currently contended by the Datsun GO and Renault KWID, and by the looks of the spec sheet, it might have this fight won.

Mercedes-AMG C63 S Review Mercedes-AMG C63 S Review – The Last of a Legend?

 Calvin Fisher

---

When the C55 AMG was released into the wild, enthusiasts were astonished at how competent it was, how it could finally go around bends with the alacrity of an M3 as opposed to the sofa-like demeanour of something more… Shall we say, American? Fast forward to now, 2019 and you could argue that the C63 S is the perfect eight-cylinder super saloon.

New Porsche Macan Driven Carshop First Drive: New Porsche Macan Turbo

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin attends the international launch of the Porsche Macan Turbo, right here in Cape Town. When Stuttgart slaps the Turbo badge on the arse of a Porsche the automotive world takes note. Yes, it means it's turbo-charged, but so is everything else nowadays - so this particular badge needs to mean so much more than just the terms of its aspiration.

New Nissan Navara Stealth Review Nissan Navara Stealth Review – (Spoiler: It’s Not Very Stealthy)

 Calvin Fisher

---

Stealth; a noun meaning “cautious and surreptitious action or movement.” Example, the silence and stealth of a hungry cat. Similar to: secretiveness, sneakiness and covertness. Not exactly the word we’d use to describe the new Nissan Navara Stealth edition which in the time Calvin Fisher spent behind the wheel, garnered quite a lot of attention.

Mercedes-Benz CLS 400d Review Mercedes-Benz CLS 400d Review – AMG Line 4Matic

 Calvin Fisher

---

Mercedes-Benz has grown more prolific than ever with its hot badge – if not outright building AMG models, then extending the line in terms of styling in the form of aero and more with models like this, the AMG Line cars. And even extending to diesel engine models, again, such as this, the CLS 400d which Calvin Fisher has been driving recently.

Mitsubishi Triton Review Mitsubishi Triton Review – 2.4L DI-DC A/T 4X4

 Calvin Fisher

---

Triton, a moniker dating back to 1978 for the Japanese brand, but in South Africa it’s ‘Colt’ that we collectively refer to when thinking of Mitsubishi bakkies. That name was dropped a generation ago – this now the second iteration – can this new Mitsubishi Triton rock (and roll) with the class leaders, Hilux and Ranger? Calvin Fisher finds out…

New BMW X5 Review BMW X5 Review: M50d – The Biggest Five

 Calvin Fisher

---

BMW basically invented this niche two decades ago with the original X5, the sporty active vehicle (SAV) – a segment where Land Rover always played in the mud and Jaguar, with the prior firm’s help, are only now starting to wade more deeply. This, though, is BMW’s hottest X – a formula we’ve seen before but in a new format that needs to be unpacked.

2019 Peugeot 108 Launch Review Carshop First Drive: 2019 Peugeot 108 Active

 Calvin Fisher

---

In SA, we think of small cars as cheap, budget-friendly entry points to car ownership, but in Europe they're simply small cars. A car that is small, and therefore perfect for packed city streets. This is that, a stylish and youthful steer that under promised and over delivered. Calvin Fisher has driven it at the launch and liked it very much.

Peugeot 5008 Review Carshop First Drive: Updated Peugeot 5008

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has driven the new Peugeot 5008 available with either 121kW/240Nm if you opt for the 1.6l turbopetrol, or with 110kW/370Nm if you prefer the 2.0l turbodiesel. Both available in Allure and flagship GT Line trim levels and all for under R600,000. Does it live up to the "Refined, safe, innovative cars that are engaging to drive" promise?

Meruza Prim8 Meet Mureza And The Prim8

 Calvin Fisher

---

Later this week when the Automechanika Johannesburg Expo begins at the Nasrec Convention Centre, this crossover/hatchback makes its debut. It's called the Mureza Prim8 and it's the first model from a debutante African car manufacturer, to be built initially, from Semi Knockdown Kits (SKD) kits at the Automotive Supplier Park in Rosslyn, Pretoria.

Audi RS5 Review Audi RS5 Review – Vorsprung Wonder Coupe

 Calvin Fisher

---

Born in the heyday of the TT and R8, the Audi A5 seems like a mere style car than a sports car. Some entertainment on a challenging bit of tarmac – upper thigh sensations as opposed to hand down the pants variety. Bold claim, indeed, but this is no ordinary A5, this wears an RS badge. Did it stir Calvin Fisher’s nether regions? Read on to find out…

Range Rover Velar Review Range Rover Velar Review: D300 SE - A waft-worthy Velvet Glove

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Velar is a slippery rendition of its Range Rover SUV format – trading utilitarian chops for a snazzy roofline that compromises headroom – but with sportier looks. Seen here in blown diesel guise it puts out 221kW and 700Nm and will sprint to 100kph in 8.9 seconds. Impressive, yes. Smooth, yes. But all is not as seems. Calvin Fisher explains…

Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition Driven Carshop First Drive: Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition

 Calvin Fisher

---

50 years, half a century of Nippon's most consistent giant slayer, Godzilla, commemorated here in this 50th Anniversary Edition. If you're looking for more beyond its retro inspired sticker job you won't find much. Not much, if anything was needed if we're honest. But the choice of colour has Calvin Fisher feeling things he hasn't felt in years.

New Audi RS4 Review Audi RS4 Avant Review – We Tune Into Rage Station 4

 Calvin Fisher

---

With a playlist full of 80s synth and the perfect time of day – those moments before sunrise, with the night's cool air still hanging in the sky – is there a better backdrop to hustle quick four-wheeled driven machinery up (and down) possibly the Cape’s finest mountain pass? Add a 331kW/600Nm Audi RS4 into this mix, and Calvin Fisher says, no!

15 Iconic Cars You'll See in South Africa You Know You’re in South Africa When...

 Calvin Fisher

---

These are not the fifteen best cars sold in South Africa. They’re not necessarily South African specials nor are they the halo model of their litter, rather simply they are synonymous with our fine country and the folk who live in it. Calvin Fisher puts together his list of 15 somewhat iconic South African cars.

New Suzuki Vitara Turbo Driven Carshop First Drive: New Suzuki Vitara Turbo

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Suzuki Vitara finally receives turbo power, no small thing for an SUV first conceived in 1988! With a plethora of features and a powertrain with real verve, the Vitara goes from strong performer to no brainer. A pity, then, that it will in all likelihood get lost in the biggest, most hotly contested segment out there.

Subaru WRX 2.0 ES Premium Review Subaru WRX Review – 2.0 ES Premium CVT

 Calvin Fisher

---

A CVT ‘box in a rally-bred Subaru WRX? Has the beloved, unassuming performance sedan grown up, or sold out? Get your head around this and the WRX 2.0 ES Premium makes a strong case for a usable, everyday sedan, but one that can entertain on highways, mountain passes and everything in-between. As long as you’re not married to your disposable income.

Car Nostalgia What Do We Mean, Nostalgia?

 Calvin Fisher

---

Yes. Mr Fisher drive two old cars. Yes, they remind him of a more interesting time in motoring. But is that as far as it goes? See, design is in an intrinsic thing, it’s resides deep inside our DNA, and when we spot something old and get a warm fuzzy feeling, it has a lot more to do with ourselves than the car. Calvin Fisher explains.

Lexus RC F Dezzi Raceway Launch Quick Drive: Lexus RC F – Sensory Stimulation Chamber

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher was whisked away to the Kwazulu-Natal South Coast to (briefly) sample the Lexus RC F, and RC F Track Edition. The former, a heavy V8 powered coupe that looks fantastic–and at R1.3m a tempting alternative to the Toyota Supra, and the latter a heavy V8 powered coupe with more carbon fibre and aerodynamics ad-ons than you could imagine.

2019 Suzuki Swift Sport Driven Carshop First Drive: 2019 Suzuki Swift Sport

 Calvin Fisher

---

The 3rd generation Suzuki Swift Sport has arrived with a bang, crackle and pop from it’s new turbocharged 1.4-litre engine. It’s lighter, lower and more powerful than ever and boasts a power to weight ratio greater than a Fiesta ST and Cooper S, with a sweet chassis worthy of exploitation. So, Calvin Fisher did just that at its recent launch.

New Hyundai Tucson Sport Driven Carshop First Drive: Hyundai Tucson Sport – Tuck it in, Son!

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher spent some time (on local roads and a local racetrack) in the new Hyundai Tucson Sport – a homegrown, hotter version of Korean marque’s medium-sized SUV. The previous generation model enjoyed strong sales and now in 2019 is offered in either turbopetrol or turbodiesel guise, with both featuring 150kW and ample torque outputs.

New Toyota Supra Driven South Africa Carshop First Drive: Toyota Supra GR

 Calvin Fisher

---

Put the kettle on, pour yourself a cup of coffee and settle in – Calvin Fisher has a lot to say about the new Toyota Supra. For good reason, the Supra is many things to many people, but as the owner of a ‘83 Mk2 for him, it no doubt means a little more. Dormant for 17 years immortalized in cinema and video games, this is it, this is the new Supra.

Fiat Panda vs Golf GTi Under The Right Conditions, I’ll Take on Anyone

 Calvin Fisher

---

If you think that Calvin Fisher fancies himself as a hotshot behind the wheel, you couldn't be further from the truth. All cars are inherently capable and if you have a basic understanding of how to corner, transforming anything, from a humble hatchback to a slab-sided panelvan, into something capable of humiliating faster metal can be easy.

Jaguar E-Pace HSE Review At a Glance: Jaguar E-Pace HSE 240D AWD (2.0 D)

 Calvin Fisher

---

Having already tested the R Dynamic version of the Jaguar E-Pace just a few months ago, Calvin Fisher was handed an HSE spec version… Of course, he aimed it at the open road, but not before squaring off with some of the Cape’s best switchbacks. A fat car, yet competent mile muncher is the Jaguar E-Pace HSE 240D AWD (2.0 D) the pick of the bunch?

Subaru Forester Review Subaru Forester Review - 2.0i-S ES (High Spec) CVT

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Subaru Forester offers similar performance and capability to its four predecessors – that’s five iterations over its 20-year lineage during which period we wouldn’t exactly say the styling has deviated too much – however, is this new 2019 model still stuck in the past or has Subaru moved their game on enough to sway a new generation of buyers?

Toyota Supra South Africa Toyota Supra, The Most Tuned Car in The World? And We Have Prices

 Calvin Fisher

---

Ahead of the new Toyota Supra launch later the week, Calvin Fisher reflects on what it was like to have an GT86 for a year, not to mention owning a 36-year-old Celica Supra. Oh, and we have pricing for this BMW co-developed coupe packing a turbo-charged straight six 3.0 litre with 250kW and 500Nm on tap – good for a 4 or so second sprint to 100kph.

Toyota Hilux GR Sport Driven Toyota Hilux Legend 50 & GR Sport Review

Peugeot 3008 GT Line Review Peugeot 3008 Review - There and Back in the Peugeot 3008 GT Line

 Calvin Fisher

---

Having already sampled the regular 3008 last year, and loved it, Calvin Fisher jumped at the chance to drive it again, this time in GT Line trim. Has this competent, comfortable family crossover been ruined by the addition of sporty ‘GT Line’ addendum or is it still deserving of accolades such as Euro Car of the Year? Our esteemed editor finds out.

Audi Q8 Review 55 TSI Audi Q8 Review - 55 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic

 Calvin Fisher

---

Audi’s new flagship SUV plays a familiar game, invented by BMW. Where the X6 was an X5 with a sloping roof and the X4 was ditto to the X3, the Q8 is a Q7 with five seats and a roofline reminiscent of the old original Quattro, with a street presence level nearing ‘Master’ and a literal 'want for nothing' level of equipment. Calvin Fisher weighs in…

Naturally Aspirated Sports Cars Under R1million Last of The Action Heroes

 Calvin Fisher

---

Don’t get us wrong – we love boost as much as the next driver, but there’s something about perfectly the linear acceleration with razor’s edge response of a naturally aspirated engine, and well, we’ll miss it as the world goes turbo. Calvin Fisher lists five of the greatest naturally aspirated sports cars you can still buy for under 1 Million Rand.

Ford EcoSport Titanium Review Ford EcoSport Review: 1.0 Ecoboost Titanium Auto - Cool Blue, in Red

 Calvin Fisher

---

With the updated EcoSport you get a dependable family car with just enough space, plenty of character and more features than you'd expect - in an attractive city-friendly package with some clever tech thrown in as well. And where the original felt a little rough around the edges, the EcoSport is now all grown up, albeit with a price tag to match.

VW Gold R 228kW Review VW Golf R DSG Review - Sub-five and Sublime

 Calvin Fisher

---

The VW Golf R – now with the full 228kW – feels pared back, not stripped away. Purposeful, yet never bare bones. Nor does it feel over-engineered, an argument we’d level at previous models. If Calvin Fisher was Goldilocks, he’d be ecstatic because right here, right now the Golf R is the perfect car. Not too racy, not slow neither. But just right.

New Porsche 911 Carrera S Driven Scoop: New 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S Driven

Mahindra XUV300 First Drive Carshop First Drive: Mahindra XUV300 W8 1.5l Turbodiesel

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has returned from the launch of the XUV300, a compact SUV in the vein of a Suzuki Vitara, and quite simply he liked it. Since 2011, Mahindra have made Mzansi their second home with their product releases – and with this, the XUV300, it feels like their halo product has arrived. This is the best passenger car Mahindra has ever made.

Lamborghini Huracan Perfomante driven in Cape Town Carshop First Drive: Lamborghini Huracan Performante - Drive Mode Set to Rage

 Calvin Fisher

---

Lamborghini is Genesis, the beginning, both for the supercar and for many millions of motoring enthusiasts. Never race-cars for the road like their rivals in Maranello, Lamborghinis were created for the drama, for the emotions, for the infectious passion. This is the Lamborghini Huracan Perfomante, and Calvin Fisher has the drive mode set to rage.

How to do a burnout safely The Anatomy of a Bloody Good Burnout

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher explores that most satisfying means of turning rubber into vapour – the burnout. Is it childish? Sure. Satisfying? You bet. But it doesn’t need to be dangerous. In fact, you absolutely don’t need to put yourself nor anyone you love in harm’s way, or an innocent bystander either for that matter. Class is now in session. Pay attention.

Jaguar Simola Hillclimb 2019 Nissan GT-Rs Dominate The Jaguar Simola Hillclimb

 Calvin Fisher

---

There are few events on the calendar that can claim to be this full of petrol-swilling exotica, driven in total anger, often over the weekend. Nor can they claim a pit lane this interesting with both drivers and cars. But there can be only one King of The Hill, and this year the crown went to Franco Scribante in his left-hand drive Nissan GT-R R35.

Nissan NP300 Hardbody Review Nissan NP300 Hardbody Review – Double Cab 2.5 TDi Hi-Rider 4x4

 Calvin Fisher

---

And now for something completely different. Well, kind of, you see the new NP300 is many things, but hardly rebuilt from the ground up. It cuts a familiar profile and offers performance and capability that builds neatly on what comes before it – that’s several iterations over the Datsun Pickup lineage which began in 1955. So, well over six decades.

Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon in Cars Unique. Like Every Other Car.

 Calvin Fisher

---

You buy a new car, something less ordinary, something like a Fiat Bravo. Suddenly, you see Fiat Bravo’s just about everywhere you look. "Ha! You never see those!" You think. But then it intensifies, and suddenly you'll see two, or even three at once. Yep, that’s the Baader-Meinhoff Phenomenon. Calvin Fisher digs into this frustrating occurrence.

New Suzuki Jimny Review Wanderlust Episode Two - Loving The Suzuki Jimny

 Calvin Fisher

---

Every so often a new car is released which manages to cause quite a stir. More often than not they wear illustrious badges on their noses, cost more than a house, and are way beyond the reach of most mere mortals. The new Suzuki Jimny is the opposite of that, but yet is sold out everywhere! Why? Calvin Fisher tires to answer that question and more…

New Porsche Macan Driven in Cape Town Carshop First Drive: New Porsche Macan 2.0 - Macan Again?

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher was in a very cold Cape Town recently for the local launch of the refreshed Porsche Macan – Porsche’s baby SUV. Available as a 180kW/370Nm ‘entry level’ option or if you’re feeling particularly racy, 260kW/480Nm ‘S’ flavour, is the Macan merely a ‘tarted up’ Audi Q5 or is there more to this SUV than meets the eye? Read on to find out…

New Bi-Turbo Ford Ranger Driven Carshop First Drive: New Bi-Turbo Ford Ranger Double Cab

 Calvin Fisher

---

We were whisked away to George to drive Ford’s latest Ranger Double Cab, of course in range-topping bi-turbo 157kW/500Nm guys. While those under-the-skin figures are impressive, so too its ability to conquere the Outeniqua Mountains with zero fuss (which it did), much more has changed. Calvin Fisher explains, from the picturesque Eastern Cape.

New 2019 Z4 Driven Carshop First Drive: BMW Z4 - sDrive20i Sportline

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher attended the launch of the much-anticipated new BMW Z4 and as luck would have it he found himself in the base BMW Z4 sDrive20i. Not a problem, though. Instead of scaring himself for the 300km launch drive, he got to enjoy a car with 145kW and 320Nm - enough for a thrilling blast, but not enough to cause mayhem.

New Mitsubishi Triton Driven Carshop First Drive: 2019 Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 D 4x4 Auto

 Calvin Fisher

---

The new Mitsubishi Triton represents 40 years of Japanese engineering meaning it is as robust and capable as anything we've ever driven, on road and off it. The development of the new Triton began in 2016 and while the styling isn't for everyone, Calvin Fisher is a fan of its futuristic looks - intimidating and solid to behold, it definitely, is.

New BMW 8 Series Driven Carshop First Drive: BMW M850i xDrive - Piloting the Wunderwagen

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher was in Cape Town to sample BMWs new flagship – the 8-Series. Co-developed alongside the M8 GTE race car that raced recently at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and more impressively at the 24 Hours of Lemans, this new 8-Series is more ‘race track infused’ than you might think. Great! But more importantly is it still a Grand Tourer, though?

Calvin Fisher Porsche 911 GT3RS Letter From The Editor: Get The Balance Right

 Calvin Fisher

---

While the motoring industry must balance EVs and hybrids, body shells of every shape and size to cater to you, the customer, having ever evolving needs from your car, we at Carshop are also always working hard on getting the balance of content right. From exotic first drives to mundane sedan reviews, that is our duty to you, the reader.

Haval H9 Review Living With: The Haval H9 Luxury

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has spent seven days in the very new Haval H9 – the Chinese marque’s flagship model. A full 7 seat SUV, the H9 comes packed with safety technology, driving modes and connectivity options, paired with a supremely comfortable helm and well put together interior. Have Chinese cars come of age? With the Haval H9, it sure feels like it.

New BMW 3 Series 330i 320d Driven Carshop First Drive: New BMW 3 Series - Time For The Sublime

 Calvin Fisher

---

The new BMW 3 Series – codenamed the G20 – first seen at last years Paris Motor Show and hotly anticipated ever since. Calvin Fisher was recently given keys to a pair of new them, the 330i and 320d, and let loose on his favourite Cape roads. Sensibility and 320d quickly dismissed. He came for one thing – the 330i. Driving pleasure ensues.

New Suzuki Ertiga Driven Carshop First Drive: New Suzuki Ertiga - What a lot, it’s got

 Calvin Fisher

---

Budget seven-seater motoring can be a dull affair. However, Suzuki aim to turn this around with the introduction of their all-new Ertiga. A new look, a revised interior – now with black interior trim – with more space for all occupants and powered by the Jimny’s naturally aspirated 1.5 litre. Calvin Fisher reports from the local launch.

New Toyota Corolla Hatch Driven Carshop First Drive: Toyota Corolla Hatch - Corolla Rehatched

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Corolla is 53 years old in South Africa, and this its 12th generation. It is lower and sportier than all it replaces - the halo Toyota hatch above the Yaris and Aygo – and naturally it will be pitted against rivals such as the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Mazda 3, and more. Calvin Fisher reports from the launch event held recently in Cape Town.

Mitsubishi EclipFrontse Cross Driven Carshop First Drive: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

 Calvin Fisher

---

Remember when the Mitsubishi Eclipse was a Hollywood superstar driven by Brian Earl Spilner – the fake name of undercover detective Brian O’Conner – Paul Walker’s protagonist from the first Fast and Furious instalment some 20 years ago? Well, forget about that. The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact SUV. Calvin Fisher has driven it.

Mahindra KUV100 Review Mahindra KUV100 Review - NXT G80 K8

 Calvin Fisher

---

The little Mahindra KUV100 does have a few redeeming features, but as Calvin Fisher says, this review is not going to have a happy ending. At nearly R200k for this range-topping variant and considering what else you could buy at the price, the KUV100’s oddball ergonomics, agricultural underpinnings and other shortcomings just can’t be overlooked.

New Renault Koleos First Drive Carshop First Drive: New Renault Koleos - Flagship Frenchman

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher has driven the new Renault Koleos - its second coming in fact - playing in the D SUV Segment, rivalling the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Ford Kuga. If you’re not put off by a car that is more handsome than you – the Koleos is a hot prospect and trumps by some margin its marmite (you either loved, it or hated it) predecessor.

GWM Steed 5E Review GWM Steed 5E Review: 2.4l Xscape 4x2 - Another trusty Steed

 Calvin Fisher

---

The GWM Steed 5E is by no means a rival to the current crop of lifestyle double-cabs - it isn't raised to the heavens, nor wide of stance and bulging at the arches. Rather, it's a no nonsense, no frills, honestly capable bakkie. Calvin Fisher spent a week in one, and surprisingly, he’s even ready to give it the green tick for reliability too.

Road tripping in the Haval H6 C Wanderlust Episode One - Road Tripping in The Haval H6 C

 Calvin Fisher

---

There was a time when you wouldn't risk taking a Chinese SUV into some of the most remote parts of the country - far from a tow truck, far from a garage, far from anything really. Those times are truly behind us. At least for Haval. Calvin Fisher’s been road tripping in the hot, sweaty and gravely Karoo, and came back suitably impressed.

End for Toyota 86 Is This The End of The Road For The Toyota 86?

 Calvin Fisher

---

Now that a 4-cylinder Supra exists in Land of the Rising Sun with an even smaller footprint on the road, it does seem to make the 86 redundant save for its more accessible price point. Is this the end of the road for the Toyota 86? And with it of course, its twin - the Subaru BRZ. Calvin Fisher wades into the conversation.

Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC Review Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC Review - Black Mirror

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Mercedes-AMG C43 was built to take on the likes of Audi’s S5 and BMW’s M340i. It isn’t the V8, and it doesn’t try to be, and if we’re honest is quite a tame steer thanks to the marque’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Is this the high-performance saloon choice for a cooler, perhaps older head? Calvin Fisher ponders this and more…

New Nissan Navara 4x2 Review New Nissan Navara Double Cab Review: 2.3D 4x2 LE Manual - Navara Nirvana

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher makes a strong case that the new Nissan Navara in 4x2 spec is all the bakkie you’ll ever need. Capacious, torquey with loads of curb side appeal matched with great cabin furnishings including the perennial connectivity requirements, there’s little to match the Navara. A great car, a better bakkie.

New Ford Ecosport Review Ford EcoSport Review: 1.0 Titanium Automatic

 Calvin Fisher

---

The ‘new’ Ford Ecosport is a great little compact SUV but you can now add a deluge of new competitors from China, India as well as the impressive Mazda CX-3 and Renault Captur for it to combat. In that regard, for the ‘Sport who ignited this market segment, life is about to get a lot tougher. However, it can still competently hold its own.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Review Mercedes-Benz A-Class Review - A Class Above

 Calvin Fisher

---

The A200 blends impressive performance, considering the relatively small engine, and sporty handling. At R529k we even think it is reasonably priced. Perhaps only let down by a clunky centre console, it helps to think of it not as an expensive hatch, but rather a right-sized Benz. Calvin Fisher has driven it and came away pleasantly surprised.

Newspaper Used Car Classifieds Nostalgia is Coming Up Short

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher doesn’t consider himself a hopeless nostalgic, in fact, he’s quite the geek with a love for modern technology, but he does miss the times when a well-worded string of sentences was all it took to evoke within another person the desire to drive 40km just for the opportunity to look at a 20 year old car in case he might want to own it.

Kia Stinger GT Review Kia Stinger GT Review - The Quickening

 Calvin Fisher

---

Forget the Shuma of the 90s, the Kia Stinger is a phenomenal machine. Sure, at R849,900 it isn't cheap, and really, it shouldn't be, it has no need to be. The marque has grown in quality and perhaps more importantly reliability, and at this price it's R50,000 cheaper than the BMW 440i Gran Coupe, whilst have an extra 37kW and 100Nm to play with.

Jaguar E-Pace Review Jaguar E-Pace First Drive Review: D240 AWD R-Dynamic HSE - Feral Fighter

 Calvin Fisher

---

The Jaguar E-Pace is a tech-laden affair that engages the driver in all the right ways. Performance is adequate but perhaps just not what you’d expect from a Jaguar with an R-Dynamic badge, and a price nearing R1million. Expectations are high at this price point, and this Jag just doesn’t feel special enough to justify that price tag.

New Toyota Yaris Review New Toyota Yaris Review – What Came Next

 Calvin Fisher

---

When the Toyota Yaris arrived on our shores in 2005, Facebook was just a year old. YouTube was a newborn and Twitter not yet a glint in its creators’ eyes. This is 2018, though, so what has changed? Well, a lot. Calvin Fisher has spent some time with the new Toyota Yaris and in more ways than not, has almost discovered a whole new, manlier car.

New Datsun GO Review Carshop First Drive: Newer, Better, Safer Datsun Go

 Calvin Fisher

---

The new Datsun GO attempts to right a lot of the wrongs of that initial car, now with the inclusion of ABS and airbags. It is better in every way, especially the interior, but it's still not the car we’d want to be in, in a higher speed fender bender. But it's a step in the right direction and at this price point in the A segment at least on par wi

1995 McLaren F1 GTR 10 British Cars to Drive Before You Die

 Calvin Fisher

---

Sure, nowadays you’re spoilt with exotic metal from the land of tea and cucumber sandwiches thanks to the likes of the McLaren 720S, Aston Martin DB11 and the Rolls-Royce Dawn. But we remember them when they were analogue, characterful, green… Anyway, here are 10 British cars you need to drive before you die.

Peugeot 308 Review Peugeot 308 Review - 1.2T Allure Auto

 Calvin Fisher

---

Full disclosure: Calvin Fisher is fan of the 308. Selling on average only ten per month in recent times, there is little wonder why it vanished entirely from South African for over a year. But, if you’re willing to overlook some of the, perhaps unfair, traditional French product cynicism, there is value and fun to be had in the Peugeot 308.

Updated Kia Sorento & Kia Grand Sedona Driven Carshop First Drives: 2019 Kia Sorento and Grand Sedona

 Calvin Fisher

---

Celebrating 20 years of operation in Mzansi, Kia South Africa invited us to drive their revamped range of Sorento SUVs and Grand Sedona MPVs from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. An extended road trip weekend through some of the most picturesque parts of South Africa in two torquey, diesel powered, consummate highway cruisers? Of course, we obliged.

Pareidolia in the car industry Word of the day: Pareidolia

 Calvin Fisher

---

Pareidolia - A psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus, usually an image or a sound, which don’t actually exist. You know, Jesus’ face in a slice of bread or that weird face on the moon. Why are we talking about psychological phenomenons on a car website on a Friday afternoon? Well, you’ll have to read on figure out why…

New Mazda MX-5 Review Mazda MX-5 Review – The Tiny Dancer

 Calvin Fisher

---

Mazda’s loveable MX-5 still defines simple driving enjoyment – even with a funny roof and auto box. A full 100kg lighter than the car it replaces and deploying 110kW and 200Nm through the rear wheels, the new Mazda MX-5 is still a very much a Japanese take on a British roadster. A samurai on the small, what's not to love, says Calvin Fisher.

New Hyundai Kona Driven Carshop First Drive: 2018 Hyundai Kona

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher attended the launch of the new Hyundai Kona in Cape Town. What the hell is a Hyundai Kona? Well, like the Creta, it’s part compact SUV, part five-door hatchback - attractive both literally and figuratively - with pricing that places it near slap bang in the middle of the Creta range or R10k under an entry level Tucson.

Solving Cyclist Road Safety For Bike’s Sake

 Calvin Fisher

---

Sharing is caring when it comes to our roads. Calvin Fisher knows how to make this happen. In fact, he’s drafted new legislation, which is very simple, but which requires everyone’s buy-in for it to be successful. What will it cost you? Absolutely nothing… Okay not entirely nothing. How do you feel about tight fighting lycra?

VW Aerton Review Volkswagen Arteon Review - 2.0TSI 4Motion R-Line

 Calvin Fisher

---

Effectively Volkswagen’s replacement for the CC, the new Aerton is the kind of car you’ll stare at long after you’ve parked it. And then some. Beyond good looks, though, it is a worthy rival to the ‘Teutonic Three’ (BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class), so good in fact, Calvin Fisher struggled to find fault with it.

2018 VW Polo GTi Review 2018 VW Polo GTI Review – White Good

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher spent a week with the new VW Polo GTI. One question was top of mind; is this the best Polo GTI there’s ever been? In some ways closer to the original Golf GTI than anything else we’ve previously seen, and in others it almost makes its larger sibling – the Golf GTI – feel redundant. Read on for our review of the 2018 VW Polo GTI.

Drift City 2018 Gallery Here is Your Official Drift City 2018 Gallery

 Calvin Fisher

---

Drift City 2018 – a smoky ‘driftkhana’ spectacle – held under the most iconic mountain on the planet. Where the hottest drift talent descend for the opportunity of sliding their rides for points against the best of the best. Stanced out whips, banging sound installs, bleeding edge customs… Calvin Fisher was there, with his camera. Enjoy!

New 2018 Suzuki Swift Review 2018 Suzuki Swift Review – Swiftly Does It

 Calvin Fisher

---

No one needs to convince Calvin Fisher of the benefits of an affordable city-centric hatchback – you’d be preaching to the converted – especially one originating from the Suzuki stable. Has the plucky Asian grown too big for its boots, or does it retain some of that original charm which won the heart of so many when it first arrived on our shores?

New Suzuki Jimny 2019 The 2018 Festival of Motoring Has Come and Gone

 Calvin Fisher

---

The 2018 Festival of Motoring has come and gone and Calvin Fisher was there to experience first-hand what has become South Africa’s (only) flagship motor show. Camera in hand – as always – he spent some time with a few interesting new debutants, all of which will be making their way to our shores, quite soon.

New Toyota GT86 Lands in South Africa New Toyota GT86 Lands in Mzansi

 Calvin Fisher

---

Toyota have finally added the GT prefix to its even further-refined 86, their rear-wheel driven sports car for the masses, streamlining the range right down to a single high-spec derivative. It thankfully retains that brilliant flat-four 2.0 litre motor, the D-4S boxer partnered with a manual 6-speed transmission making it the purist's choice.

Mazda CX-3 Review 2018 Mazda CX-3 Review: Seven Things You Need to Know

 Calvin Fisher

---

Simply put, it's the Mazda CX-3 is the Hiroshima based brand’s entry into the compact SUV segment. Featuring a brilliant engine – a rorty naturally aspirated 2.0-litre unit – available throughout the Mazda range, very attractive styling, and respectable stand spec levels. Calvin Fisher has spent a week languishing about in it. He had this to say.

Suzuki Dzire Review Suzuki Dzire Review: 1.2GL - Small. But Perfectly Formed

 Calvin Fisher

---

Whilst they do proliferate rental car and ride hailing fleets and certainly don’t set pulses racing, B-Segment sedans offer more practical space than their hatchback siblings. With the new Suzuki Dzire you have a competent, stylish sedan with enough power for the city life it was intended for, and it’s a frugal thing to boot.

New Renault Megane RS Driven Carshop First Drives: Renault Megane 280 RS Lux

 Calvin Fisher

---

Hot off spending quality time with the new king of hot hatches – the Honda Civic Type R – Calvin Fisher was whisked away to Port Elizabeth to sample a very worthy French competitor, the new Renault Megane RS. With high hopes and equally high pedigree for hot-hatch hoonery, is the new version able to elevate itself above the cream of the crop?

Modifying Your Car State Of Tune: Tuning. Modifying. Cutting. Shutting - Approach with respect.

 Calvin Fisher

---

This might sound counter-intuitive but the first thing to consider before customising your car - putting your own stamp on it, expressing your individualism with it - is to follow the rules. And of course, says Calvin Fisher, don’t yourself too seriously. But, most of all, make sure you have fun.

Honda Civic Type R Review Honda Civic Type R Review - You Mad, Mad, Race Car!

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher claims this is the best (fast) car he’s driven this year. High praise considering he’s driven Porsches, Bentleys and some quick Renaults too. Why? Well, you’ll have to read on. But, perhaps surprisingly the fact that the new Civic Type R broke the Nurburgring record for front wheel drive production cars is not the biggest reason.

How Not to Modify Your Car So You Want to Modify Your Car?

 Calvin Fisher

---

At Carshop, we realise that you want to dress your car to impress or stand out in the ever-burgeoning crowd of metal. From cringe-worthy undercarriage lighting to exhausts bigger than a jumbo coffee can, here are just a few easy ways to waste away your street credibility, and stick out like a sore thumb. Tip: Don’t do these to your sweet new ride.

Mahindra Pik Up Review Mahindra S10 Pik Up Review - 2.2 MHAWK 4x4 Double Cab

 Calvin Fisher

---

Perhaps Calvin Fisher is biased towards honest motoring of old. Perhaps he’s just a fan of the underdog. He’ll confess to both, but with the Mahindra S10 Pik Up he’ll also confess to a rough and ready double-cab bakkie with more comfort than you might expect. It might not be easy on the eye, but at R354k all-in, it’s certainly easier on the pocket.

BMW X2 Review BMW X2 Review - xDrive20d M Sport X Steptronic

 Calvin Fisher

---

The new BMW X2 is to the X1 what the X6 is to the X5, and the X4 is to the X3 - a less practical (and more coupe-like) version that favours style over substance. And, while BMW scramble to plug every niche imaginable, and then some, we’re only worried about two things… Is it any good, and who might it aimed at? Calvin Fisher digs in to find out.

Nissan GT-R Let's Talk About The Nissan GT-R

 Calvin Fisher

---

The next version will be special. All of them have been special. We’ve driven them in Gran Turismo in our bedrooms and watched them dice in Fast and The Furious. Calvin Fisher waxes lyrical over a badge he’s lusted over since, well… Forever! From the BNR32 of 1991 through to the recently debuted Nissan Italdesign R35, it of course the Nissan GT-R.

Calvin Fisher Opinion You Will Wever Drive a Calvin Fisher

 Calvin Fisher

---

Perhaps it’s just us, but we believe a degree of humility and selflessness is required to achieve something truly great. Call it a belief in the bigger picture versus the pride of sticking one’s name on every bloody thing you make… Calvin Fisher compares himself to David Grohl and John DeLorean. Or at least we think he does. This is a weird one.

Stephane Peterhansel Lewis Hamilton vs Sarel Van Der Merwe?

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher tells tales of driving a diesel-powered VW Passat with former South African Rally Drivers Champion Sarel Van Der Merwe, or, as he is often referred to as, his unapologetic alter ego Supervan. He also mentions riding shotgun with F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and 13 time Dakar Rally champion Stephane Peterhansel.

Autonomous Driving and Petrolheads Is The Road to Full Autonomy a Dead End?

 Calvin Fisher

---

Between legislation, hackers, and the evil synergy between the two, is the road to full autonomous driving a dead end? Moreover, when the robots do fully takeover and Ghost in The Shell is no longer science-fiction, but reality, what will be left for the humble petrolhead? In Africa at least, Calvin Fisher ponder this, and more…

Badge Engineering in The Automotive Industry A Game I Like to Play - The Badge Test

 Calvin Fisher

---

Badge engineering - a long-lived plague in the automotive industry. Should a manufacturer’s emblem – their icon, logo, that which differentiates them from everyone else – come with heritage, pedigree, a story? Or has the industry become a melting pot of shared identities? Calvin Fisher uses his finger to prod the concept of badge engineering…

2018 MINI Cooper S Convertible Review 2018 Mini Cooper S Convertible Review - (Sport Auto) – The Tiny Trooper

 Calvin Fisher

---

Calvin Fisher reviews the 2018 Mini Cooper S Convertible, a far cry from his beloved original British Racing (more like avocado) green Mini Cooper 1100. What’s changed? Well, a lot really, but if you’re happy to eschew stowage space for circular themed pace and fun, the MINI Cooper is still a great little British Sports Car.

Calvin Fisher has been for a (lustful) walk down memory lane – a visit to Freek De Kock’s Datsun Heritage Museum in Bothaville, Free State, where under one, or two roofs, you can touch, sniff, smell (but not scratch) rarified classic Datsun and Nissan metal. From Farilady Zs to the 510 SSS, this is bucket list stuff, all right here in Mzansi.

Volvo V90 Cross Country - A Swede Escape

 Calvin Fisher

---

It's a known fact that South Africans don't buy wagons. Why? Well, we’d argue that there isn’t one. Unfathomable really, when you consider two things; they’re perfectly practical and arguably very stylish. Calvin Fisher has spent time with the stylish Swede, pondering why station wagons have fallen foul locally, and he seems to be smitten.

Mercedes-Benz A Class L Sedan Behold, The Mercedes-Benz A-Class L Sedan

 Calvin Fisher

---

Wait, isn’t there already an A-Class sedan? Yes, it's called the CLA? Well, truth be told Merc will say it really is a four-door coupe saloon. Confused? If you're not following then we urge you not to lose too much sleep as it's been developed solely for the Chinese market (for now), where it will battle the BMW 2 Series sedan.

Peugeot 3008 Review Peugeot 3008 Review - 1.6 THP Allure

 Calvin Fisher

At R459,900 the Peugeot 3008 1.6T Allure is an extremely competitive package, with very few cons leading us to question; is it worth the risk? We say yes. Sure, there are better cars, but there might not be a better ‘unashamedly French family car’, and after a full week of driving it that’s a category that suddenly appeals to us now.

Peugeot 208 Review 1.2 GT Line Peugeot 208 Review - 1.2 GT Line

 Calvin Fisher

---

There's much to enamour you with the Peugeot 208 GT Line. At R259,000 we’d even accuse it of being reasonable, with plenty of kit, and of course, Peugeot’s 3 year/100 000km warranty and 45 000km service plan to further sweeten the deal. It feels like the perfect alternative to the econobox stalwarts, which alone is worth the price of admission.

Meet the perky little Peugeot 208 that sits at just under R260,000 but offers percolating performance you'd associate with something a fair bit dearer. So far, we’re impressed after a brief first drive, and be sure check back next week after our full evaluation of what is a great pocket rocket.

Safe Stowage Space Bakkies Now, Where Will I Put All My Stuff?

 Calvin Fisher

Bakkies, those rugged, go-anywhere, braai-anywhere, kerb anything lifestyle purchases that pair so sweetly with rugby and gravel travel are a South African favourite. But, nobody ever tells you about the biggest limitation that comes with owning a one - safe stowage space. Calvin Fisher might have the answer… Or does he?

New Polo Vivo Review Volkswagen Polo Vivo Review - 1.4 Comfortline

 Calvin Fisher

---

With the new VW Polo Vivo, Volkswagen invokes a strong sense of De Ja Vu, as the Wolfsburg firm continues their profitable trend of repurposing their previous generation Polo as the ‘new’ Polo Vivo. We predict a resounding sales success in the new Polo Vivo. And that regard, absolutely nobody should be surprised.

Yep, this is it, the new VW Polo Vivo. You could be forgiven for thinking it is the 2017 Polo, but as the saying goes “A new year, a new VW Polo, and a new Polo Vivo.” Ok, if isn’t broken then don’t fix it, especially considering the Polo family is consistently one of South Africa’s best selling cars.
