New Metal: Porsche 911 Targa 4 and 4S

What is it?

The Targa is Porsche's semi-roofless iteration of their most famous sportscar. But what it gives up in practicality (it isn't quite 100% opened up) it gains in desirability.

How does it look?

Gorgeous – I mean, see for yourself. That iconic T-Bar chrome strap across the roof instantly gives the 911 a retro pastiche whilst endowing it with one of the most sensually formed rear windscreens in the motoring world. Complete with louvre-like vents where it meets the hip line. Style over substance? Maybe. But we wouldn’t have the Porsche 911 Targa 4 any other way.

What about living with it?

I imagine that would be a very desirable scenario indeed. Porsche’s 911 is a refined experience in every one of its iterations. The Targa just so happens to be in our opinion, the most stylish and luxurious.

How does it go?

Rapidly. Power comes from a six-cylinder, three-litre boxer engine with twin turbos – good for 283kW and when combined with the optional Sport Chrono package, sprints the zero to 100kph in 4.2 seconds. The 911 Targa 4S however boasts a mega 331kW so can perform the same task in just 3.6 seconds – our-tenths faster than the car it replaces. Top speed of the 911 Targa 4 is 289kph vs 304kph in the 4S. Both come with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and intelligent all-wheel drive. The 911 Targa 4S can also be had with a new seven-speed manual gearbox, Sport Chrono package included.

Should you buy one?

If you want a ‘bite-the-back-of-your-hand’ gorgeous sliver of sports car with an affinity to vitamin D then yes, absolutely. God, yes.
