This weekend marked the third annual Drift City event. It is famous foremost for being the only such event we can think of – a smoky ‘driftkhana’ (drift meets gymkhana) spectacle – held under the most iconic mountain on the planet.
Well, most definitely on this continent. And, we really love it. Anyway. Here each year since 2016, the country’s hottest drift talent have descended for the opportunity of sliding their rides for points against the best of the best.
Nowhere else in the Cape will you see this many strange, rare and wonderful stalwart sports cars of the rear-wheel persuasion, leaning heavily into the JDM realm. An array of Nissan Silvias backed up by a contingent of Skylines, a lone Subaru BRZ, a motley crew of Toyotas of the Soarer and Corolla variety, some igusheshe and more. And that was just the slidey stuff at centre stage.
There was still stanced out whips in attendance in a more traditional show-and-shine styled support event, not to mention banging sound installs, bleeding edge customs, a go-kart track and displays of bravado from a brace of motorcyclists. But we won't pretend to get stuck into the nitty, nor the gritty so instead just look at these snaps.
Show highlights? How about a Toyota Quantum that thinks it is an Autobot. Or an army of asphalt scrapers in the shape of a Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z, Lexus coupes and more. Also the classic Chevrolets. And more Nissan GT-Rs than you'll find at the average hillclimb race.
Oh, and the Liberty Walk display cars. Yes, I think that just about covers it.
