I can still picture them, the early Korandos and Mussos with massive 'powered by Mercedes-Benz' stickers plastered across their back windows. I didn't realise it at the time, but this initial sharing of mechanicals gained the brand enviable equity. So it's sad to see it is now mostly squandered, the still languishing brand residing where the rest of the Korean firms did two decades ago.

In comparison to Hyundai and KIA's offerings they're relatively cheap, and for very good reason - while SsangYong labours away as the 4th largest manufacturer in its homeland, despite being a subsidiary of India’s Mahindra. While the marque is still known for their older SUVs (the Kyron and Actyon) as well as their pickup counterparts, the Kyron Sports and Actyon Sports, the future looks more European with revised styling across the board, as well as new models in the shape of the Rexton, Tivoli and XLV as well as a van dubbed the Rodius. In Korean, Ssangyong literally means double dragons! Sadly, we were sold lame ducks. Maybe they meant to call it SwanSong?

Likes: Rudimentary can mean tough, and does so here in these robustly built 'trucks'.

Dislikes: Those rhinoceros profiles need to get left in the 2000s and replaced with something more in line with what the buying public come to expect from a posh SUV.
