Today the brand is well represented on gravel with the ASX compact SUV, the larger Outlander 4WD and Triton-based Pajero Sport but on the asphalt there’s little to represent across the hatch and sedan segments. Delve into the second hand market and there’s tamer Lancer offerings, frugal Mirage hatchlings and again, decades of dutiful utility vehicles to browse. Feeling frivolous? Seek out a unicorn like the Evo-badged 1998 Pajero short-wheel base and laugh in the face of anyone who claims to have a performance SUV. We would.

Likes: Mitsubishi’s not short on good quality, highly capable if tragically underrated 4x4 gravel travellers – that could translate into a bargain.

Dislikes: Nostalgia prevents us from loving the days of the Mirage and pining instead for the heyday of the Lancer EVO instead.
