We know, it's a running joke, how the best British brands are now owned by the rest of the world’s nations. And those that aren't, well they no longer exist at all – we refer to you specifically BMC. MINI was one of the first to surrender, no less than BMW picking up the ailing manufacture. The days of Alec Issigonis' original Mini is long consigned to the history books, a range of tiny motorcars that encompassed hatch, panelvan and achingly cute wagon.

The new cars are a different kettle of fish, a very large kettle indeed comprising the Cooper, the Clubman, Roadster and Countryman. They all benefit from Bavaria’s finest – that’s technology, engineering, quality, safety – the full raft. One other thing all Minis, new and old, have in common however is motorsport pedigree, especially rallying where the old car was a plucky dominator in Monte Carlo and the new car (well, a heavily fettled version of it) is a front runner at Dakar Rally. As for the ownership prospects, BMW era Minis (year 2000 and beyond) are rife in second-hand car sales, offer great value and are still highly desirable.

Likes: Nobody does stylish and compact like a German Mini.

Dislikes: Urgh, we do miss the days when MINI meant small.
