The Stuttgart firm has been on a hard charge, delivering new vehicles in new segments quicker than they can make them. Most recently they delved in the pick-up category where its new X-Class bakkie has already begun to make waves. We’d argue that its greatest pedigree however lay in the sports saloon segment which it helped cultivated along with its biggest rival, BMW. Here the C-Class has pulled zero punches, especially since Mercedes acquired the AMG tuning division. Now Affalterbach’s AMG performance engines can be found in anything from hatchbacks to SUVs, even the odd Aston Martin or Pagani.

The marque also has an enviable array of off-road machinery, in fact it is one of the largest gravel-travel catalogues in all of motoring. Despite being hampered with quality control gremlins over a decade ago, the Mercedes-Benz badge is once again synonymous with excellent quality. The fact that it appeals to a younger demographic than ever before hasn’t hurt it in the image department either. As another arrow in its quiver it can boast, in Mercedes-AMG trim especially, arguably the best sounding V8 exhaust notes on the planet.

Likes: Mercedes-Benz doesn’t pull punches when it comes to performance or luxury.

Dislikes: What is there to complain about apart from the price? Premium doesn’t come cheap and here it is warranted.
