“There are no bad Kias. Think about that.”

The younger, hipper half of the South Korean duo, roared ahead in styling and desirability when the Seoul-based firm poached one Peter Schreyer, the Audi man who styled other wonderful things, such as the original TT. He gave them the tiger nose grille that lives on everything from a practical Picanto to the new and desirable quick-saloon, the Stinger. Not bad for a company that in 1998 were churning out humble A to B cars.

In their first year in South Africa Kia sold just 310. A number they match each week today. Highlights in their lineage must include the previous generation Sportage, a futuristic SUV at home in 2010, followed by a sexy (for the first time) Rio in 2012. They've accumulated 37 design accolades in a decade and is currently a JD Power rock star. Specifically, Kia is the highest ranked non-premium brand. What's more is the marque has an exciting future ahead of it too, what with performance models, hybridisation and full electrification to come. This from a company that makes its own steel, and subsequently a lot of its own components, including and quite notably their own transmissions - a fading exercise.

Between Hyundai and Kia, Chinese manufacturers have the perfect blueprint for success should they be willing to... copy.

Likes: Excellent styling that appeals to the young and old.

Dislikes: Pricing now on par with Japanese rivals, so no longer a bargain.
