Carshop First Drive: Porsche 911 GT3 RS - Slippery Devil

Porsche South Africa were foolish... Wait, no. Let me try this again. Porsche South Africa were kind enough to give us not just the keys to a brand new 911 GT3 RS, but also a petrol card and the open road. Cheers.

I've deviated from the original plan, and from the gorgeous Rooi Els road entirely. Instead, I'm now sitting in the parking lot at the top of one of my favourite mountain passes looking down on Gordon's Bay. Behind me, a flat six boxer motor measuring 4-litres in capacity and capable of 383kW and 470Nm ticks itself cool.

Those numbers don't do the performance of this very exotic animal justice. Zero to hundred comes up in 3.2 seconds. It will go on to eventually top out beyond 310kph. This is a supercar born on racetrack, green like the Nurburgring itself.

At R5 million, our particular test car comes outfitted with the Weissach upgrade pack plus a host of extras. The end result is quite simply the most feral performance car I've driven in 2018. Acceleration and revability you'll only find in a naturally aspirated car like this, a 9000rpm limit, no shortage of vents, wings and airdams and if I'm honest there's no shortage of luxury here either.

The journey up this pass is one I won't forget in a hurry thanks to handling that engages you so aggressively you're almost in need of a hostage negotiator. It’s firm, flat and seems to slice into the asphalt as it scythes along. I've covered well over 300km on this day, from Contermans Kloof in Durbanvile via Franshhoek pass to Hermanus and back again only to return as an exhausted man back in the Cape.

I was willing to give it everything I had, and the 911 GT3 RS? Well, it didn't waste any time taking it. And for my discerning pleasure, entertained me with a soundtrack to die for.

Verdict

This is one incredibly special piece of machinery, and even for this money, a relative bargain. Neck-breaking speed, a metallic orchestra heavy on the pipes, and looks to get you arrested.

Thank you Porsche for an experience we won't forget in a hurry.
