So, it’s a (or do we mean another?) Polo-sized compact SUV, available mid July 2019 for R335,000 (Comfortline) or R365,000 (Highline).
With the new T-Cross, VW will be offering a turbocharged, inline-3 cylinder 1.0-litre petrol burner to the tune of 85kW and 200Nm and netting a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100km via the use of a 7-speed DSG transmission.
What else?
Well, VW’s shiny new compact SUV will be further equipped with a range-topping blown 1.5-litre petrol engine making 110kW, sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG. But for this honour you will have to wait for early 2020 - pity. And no, there is no diesel engine waiting in the wings so it’s 93/95 octane or bust.
VW insists that more models will be added to the range later on such as a 70kW strong 1.0 TSI with a five-speed manual transmission model due in the second quarter of 2020 for a reasonable price tag also circa R300 000 for the Trendline derivative, while the flagship 1.5TSI with 110kW (7-spd DSG) arrives in the first quarter of 2020.
Did someone say Navara?
No - rather Navarra, Spain, home to production of the T-Cross at the Volkswagen factory. It will also be built in South America and China to serve typically BRIC markets. Build quality thus far is typically Volkswagen, so very good in other words. The car itself is endowed with everything it requires to be a hit on our shores – a great aesthetic that can be further enhanced when you opt for a model with the R-Line kit, a modern and airy living space plus a vivid array of mod-cons and connectivity options.
Expect best-in-class interior fit and finish
It’s clearly marketed towards the young at heart, as evidenced by the banging audio system – a BeatsAudio hi-fi. How about the 12.3-inch touchscreen which I’d argue has replaced the engine as the heart of any modern car? Rounding out the roster is VW’s extensive list of safety features and technology to make their new baby as family friendly as possible.
What do you think, is their space on your driveway and in your heart for a VW T Cross? I mean, at 4.1m long, it wouldn’t’ take up too much space.
