Is it just me, or does the CX-5 not resemble the love child of a Volvo XC40 and an Alfa Romeo Stelvio? Especially since the last update when Mazda gave it the narrow scowl of Clint Eastwood. We’ve also been a long-time fan of their revvy naturally aspirated 2.0 litre petrol engines (rated at 121kW and 210Nm) that live in everything from the CX-3 compact SUV to their loveable little sports car, the MX-5.
Don’t get us wrong - we also enjoy the 2.5 litre petrol (in AWD) and 2.2 litre diesel (Auto only in FWD and AWD) in the CX-5 but it’s at the entry-level where the CX-5 is the most competitive, where you can buy a new front-wheel driven 2.0L Active model at just R386,600. That’s a hell of a lot of SUV for well under R400k and with a peach of an engine to boot.
The smart money, however, is on the new addition to the line-up, the FWD Mazda CX-5 2,0L Individual with automatic at R480 700. In this Individual spec you will get 8-way power-adjustable front seats, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, parking sensors, heads-up display, SATNAV and a powered tailgate. And that’s a LOT of kit, especially when you start factoring in the plethora of safety gear also in tow, including but not limited to adaptive LED headlamps, lane assist and departure warnings, blind spot monitoring and more.
Colour us impressed Mazda.
