With power up by 15 kW and torque increased by 50 Nm, the new Toyota Hilux GR Sport packs a punch worthy of the GR treatment, being the latest in the stable following the recent launch of the Corolla Cross GR-S.

The GR product hierarchy comprises four levels: the first layer is GR Parts (currently under investigation in SA), which allows customers to upgrade their ordinary Hilux with GR flavour, followed by the GR-Sport designation that offers cosmetic and dynamic handling enhancements (Corolla Cross, Hilux, Land Cruiser 300). The third tier is occupied by fully-fledged GR performance models (GR86, GR Yaris, GR Supra), while the fourth and final layer is GRMN – which represents the highest level of performance tuning.

Hilux GR Sport

The Hilux GR-S has a prominent black front grille, horizontal crossbar, and Toyota lettering (a GR Sport trademark) along with bumpers based on the Raider model design (rather than Legend variants).

Black mirror caps and door handles, black side steps and a rear styling bar with GR branding complete the look - it is available with four GR colour choices – Arizona Red, Graphite Grey, Attitude Black and Glacier White.

GR design changes to the interior include a new instrument cluster with metallic bezels and red needles, a leather-trim steering wheel with red contrast stitching and aluminium pedals. GR branding also appears on the Push Start button and centre console.

Digital access to infotainment

The front seats feature Alcantara inserts, GR badging on the headrests, red accent panels, plus power adjustment for the driver's seat.

Handling also received some treatment. New monotube shock absorbers are paired with stiffer coil springs, while the wheel and tyre package comprises 17-inch alloy wheels in a Titanium finish on taller profile 265-65-R17 rubber.

Power output gains up to 165 kW (+15) and torque upped by 50 Nm to a peak of 550 Nm, achieved via an ECU calibration that interfaces with revised 6-speed automatic transmission mapping and lock-up control.

Standard specification aligns with the Legend-grade specification (except for an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and JBL audio), and it comes with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). It offers a full suite of active safety aids, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Pre-Collision System (PCS).

Visible GR Sport embellishments

Priced at R865 400, the Hilux GR Sport has a 9-services/90 000 km service plan (intervals set at 10 000 km) and a 3-year/100 000 km warranty.
