Let’s stop everything and talk about the McLaren Speedtail
At R33 million, this won’t be a discussion on affordable motoring. What will come up however is the fact that this slippery shape not only resembles an early 1990s concept (in the best way possible), but is also the fastest car to ever come out of Woking.
Only 106 of these Hyper-GTs will be sold, and comes powered with a hybrid powertrain capable of 772kW and enough torque to decimate the zero to three hundred sprint in 12.8 seconds. Before topping out at 404kph. So, quick, and at 1430kg fairly light too.
And then there’s the Ford GT Carbon Series
Remember how when the latest Ford GT came out, we were all complaining about how slow and boring it was? No, neither do we. But here we are – the Carbon Series.
A track bound monster from the Blue Oval that comes in 18kgs lighter than the standard car, thanks to carbon wheels, titanium exhausts and lugs plus a polycarbonate rear hatch.
"The Ford GT Carbon Series stands out on the road with its striking carbon fiber-rich design and on the track with its athleticism. It is yet another example of how we can bring to life our Le Mans-winning supercar in new and exciting ways so our customers can share in that magical legacy. Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance.
The Isuzu KB has been renamed the D-Max
Just like everywhere else in the world. But we get it, South Africans are incredibly loyal to those two letters, K and B, after four decades of excellent service from one of the land’s finest Hilux rivals.
With the name change comes an upgrade to six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes mated to 3.0 litre diesel engines. This should bring it in line with the mighty challengers in the double-cab segment
Ford Mustang 4-door? It’s allegedly a thing
In a surprise move, this render (by X-Tomi Design) is meant to depict Ford’s rival to the Porsche Panamera. That is according to heavy hinting dropped at a recent high-level dealership meeting.
As we covered before, Ford USA has canned all sedans and hatchbacks (whilst retaining trucks and SUVs) except for the Mustang. Which is compromised somewhat as a 2-door coupe. A four door offering could indeed be on the cards. Or not.
Shocker! SEMA Corolla genuinely desirable
That’s right – we’re calling it. The new Corolla is shaping up to be the most attractive hatchback in decades. And yes, what you’re looking at is a SEMA special but in truth, there’s no big variation from the factory car here. What do you think? Is the hot hatch game ready for another Toyota?
Lewis Hamilton finishes 4th in Mexico GP
But that’s okay because this was enough to secure his fifth Championship title, tying him with Juan Manuel Fangio and just two championships away from the great Michael Schumacher. The 33 year old has been with Mercedes-Benz since he was 13 years old, the same manufacturer that gave us the aforementioned Fangio. Sebastien Vettel had this to say, "It is not easy today but well deserved for him and I want to congratulate Lewis. They did a superb job all year. We need to stand there, accept that and send congratulations. We would have liked to have hung in there longer, but it was not to be.”
Hamilton readily acknowledges what has been his most physical, mental and emotional season ever. Job done.
Jaguar I-Pace
We have official pricing for the upcoming JaguarI-Pace – and it is not cheap. Across the range of 5 models the price, starting at R1,687,200 for the I-Pace S soars all the way to R1,920,700 for the flagship First Edition. Yikes! That’s a lot of money for a tiny SUV, even one powered by electricity.
