BMW South Africa has made good on heritage, resurrecting a 325i aka Gusheshe (All the feels). Audi says cheers to wing mirrors in place of OLED screens (Take that wind!). Mercedes-Benz has made a video about the Christopher White’s fateful accident on Chapmans Peak and his return in self-driving S-Class (Hums Fast Car), and more…

One Liners:

  • Global EV sales has risen by 50%. Good, we like road noise more than V8s anyway (sarcasm font).
  • Schaeffler built a 880kw Audi RS3 just to show they could, by using Formula E technology. Bless their teutonic hearts.
  • Mighty BMW X3 M40d is a thing now.
  • The flagship Audi Q8 has been teased ahead of 5 June reveal.

BMW does good on heritage

BMW South Africa have resurrected a 325i aka Gusheshe. This comes after the same factory restored a rare 333i and M1. Well done in preserving that Mzansi heritage, BMW. Also in their collection, a 750Li adorned by Esther Mahlangu as well as the last 3 Series to come off their Roslyn production line, plus the first X3 to have that honour. Poetic.

Bye-bye wing mirrors

According to Audi the future is here. And by the future we mean virtual mirrors. Take that, wind! Now, don't pretend you haven't toyed with the idea of what is essentially your car's 'ears', aesthetically we mean, for a sleeker look.

Car stylists have certainly followed that trend over the years reducing them to video monitors and finding ridiculous places to mount them. But it seems they've cracked the code in Ingolstadt with the advent of optional 'virtual exterior mirrors' on the upcoming E-Tron. They're essentially OLED screens between the dashboard and the door and relay the traditional info you'd get relayed with a mirror.

So on that note - take that, glass!

The story of Christopher White, but with video

In 1988, that’s three decades ago, an East London man named Christopher White famously plunged his Mercedes-Benz S-Class off Chapmans Peak Drive after losing control. He survived, according to the Mercedes-Benz commercial of 1990 because he was driving a Merc and had his seatbelt on at the time.

He remembers playing Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car at the time which is too good to be scripted really, but ultimately wasn’t paying enough attention in that fateful moment. He survived obviously, which is great because now he has returned, this time in a self-driving S-Class.

You can cut the tension with a knife as White allows the car to do what he himself failed to all those years ago.

Not a bad outcome then for a man who hasn’t attempted to drive the famous pass in 30 years.
