Tesla in South Africa

Now open it, open it wide and make happy noises.

We've all no doubt felt a bit proud at the American firm's success, with the knowledge that there was a Saffer at the helm. Yes, Elon Musk might be universally panned as a bit of a weirdo, and certainly the 47 year old is not the biggest fan of his origin story, nor his birthplace, but we'll claim him all the same.

Perhaps now more than ever before since confirming the opening of the first Tesla store in South Africa.

So is this really happening?

Well Elon dropped the news in the most Elon possible way, via a tweet:

Well there you have it. It being the range of highly desirable EVs which are rendered in typically smooth Tesla body shells, favour high performance and cost a fair whack, which after import taxes (25% for electrical cars) is set to rise even more.

You can expect an entry price point around R600,00 for the Model 3, just north of R1.2m for the Model S all the way beyond R3m for the Roadster - good value we think for a sports car capable of speeds over 400kph. Which still makes the price range competitive within the luxury performance cars market so beloved in Mzansi. But don't quote us on that. In fact, the best source of information at this point might by Elon's personal Twitter account.

More about that roadster

In case the 402kph top speed isn't impressive enough it will also leap to 100kph in under 2 seconds and can cover 1000km on just one charge. That's one impressive four-seater.

The rest of the Tesla range will all easily do over 500km on a 'tank'. A good thing since our loca recharging network has some way to go.
