The SONY what what? We’ve just learned that the company that makes cameras and the PlayStation, of course, has just made a car.

It’s just been unveiled at CES 202 and naturally, it's an electric vehicle and it looks great – like the sort of car you'd expect to drive well, on a PlayStation (this is beginning to make a lot of sense to me).

It is well conceived and styled, you'll see echoes of Jaguar E-Pace and Porsche Taycan in its lines and this is no criticism, electric vehicles are purposefully hewn from slippery metal so as to scythe through the air at an optimal rate. Similarly, in the absence of a conventional (and ergo redundant) radiator grille for cooling down oily metal bits (a fossil fuel engine and its ancillaries specifically), it too gets the same smooth visage adopted by the aforementioned cars and indeed the entire Tesla family. Apart from that truck that won’t be named. Rather than get too technical, SONY mentioned only that the Vision-S has a pair of 200kW electric motors enabling a zero 100kph in a fairly rapid 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 240kph.

It is reported to feature 33 separate sensors inside and out is resplendent with multiple widescreen displays, 310-degree audio, plus always-on connectivity. You’ll find tech from stalwarts like BlackBerry and Bosch on what is powered by a newly-designed EV platform engineered by automotive supplier Magna — which SONY assures us will be able to power other vehicle types, like an SUV.

So, what, a whole fleet of SONY cars? What is this brave new world we’re living in?

More about Magna Steyr

They’re the manufacturers of the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4, but also the Mercedes G-Class platform. It’s a 2265kg rolling test bed full of telemetry and systems for testing, not just itself, but also its occupants but still strictly just a concept – one we hope makes it to Gran Turismo Sport in the near future.
