The rotary engine is not a forgotten technology as Mazda has incorporated a smaller version in the new hybrid Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R EV, unveiled recently at the Brussels Motor Show in the UK.
The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is the latest electric vehicle offering from the Japanese automaker, and it is already turning heads in the industry.
The design of the MX-30 is a departure from traditional electric vehicle designs. Instead of the boxy, usual and futuristic look among EVs, the MX-30 has a more conventional and sporty aesthetic. Its hood and short rear deck give it a sleek and sporty look, with the front grille and headlights inspired by Mazda's signature Kodo design language.
The MX-30 also features a unique "freestyle" 4 rear door design for easy access to the back seat and cargo area.
The MX-30 engine runs on a 35,5 kWh battery that provides a range of around 200 kilometres on a single charge - perfect for urban commuting.
The battery is rechargeable using a level 1 or level 2 charger for around 6 hours using a level 2 charger.
The MX-30's advanced technology is another standout characteristic with a host of safety features, including lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The car also boasts a 7-inch touchscreen display compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Further technological advancements include a 310-degree view camera system that provides a bird's-eye view of the car's surroundings, making parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces a breeze.
The MX-30 also packs various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. These systems work together to provide a safer driving experience by helping the driver to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and to stay in their lane.
One of the most notable features of the MX-30 is its e-Skyactiv R-EV drivetrain, a combination of an electric motor and a range extender, which allows the car to switch between electric and gasoline power as needed.
The range extender is a small, lightweight rotary engine that generates electricity when the battery is low, thus giving the MX-30 a range of around 400 kilometres on a single charge and refuel.
