New Toyota GR86 Sticks to Basics

In the tradition of driver-driven cars, the all-new Toyota GR86 sticks to the basics with a manual shift version and a gutsier 2,4-litre boxer engine up front.

The GR86 recorded a 226 km/h maximum speed when mated to the manual box and 216 km/h for the auto. The auto claims 8,8 l/100km fuel consumption in the combined cycle, while the manual uses 9,5 l/100 km.

Toyota says the basic structure and every part of the engine are optimised, but its dimensions and weight are unchanged. The Greatest optimisation comes in the form of D-4S technology's port injection and in-cylinder injection - enhanced intake and exhaust functions, and a lowered friction to modify torque at all speed ranges.

The peak torque of 250 Nm is delivered earlier – at 3 700 r/min – compared to 205 Nm at 6 600 r/min in the GT86.

The six-speed manual transmission in the GR86 is now in line with the improved engine power, and the driver can switch to Track mode or switch off the Vehicle Stability Control.

The electronically controlled, six-speed, intelligent automatic transmission features paddle controls for the driver to take manual control of gear shifts. Its performance adapts to four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Snow and Track.

Light-but-high-strength materials pivot the chassis and body to provide extra rigidity while reducing weight, and front body lateral rigidity is increased by 60%. Overall body rigidity gains 50%.

The GR86 carries forward the front independent MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone setup of its predecessor. But damping and coil spring characteristics have been optimised while the anti-roll bar is connected directly to the subframe to gain maximum stability and reinforce the rear suspension.

Ventilated disc brakes are fitted front and rear, with 294- and 290-mm diameters and braking control systems – anti-lock, Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)– are provided as standard, together with an emergency brake signal system.

Exterior design details reference some of Toyota’s great sports cars of the past, such as the 2000GT and AE86 Corolla.

Overall dimensions are close to those of the GT86. But the height is lowered by 10 mm (to 1 310 mm, and the wheelbase gains by 5 mm to make it (2 575 mm).

Inside, function controls are designed and located for intuitive recognition and operation, including an air-conditioning panel in the centre console with large LED-illuminated dials and piano key switches, and door armrests with integrated release handles and long pull handles.

Standard features include DAB reception, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. USB ports and AUX sockets are also provided for device connection and recharging.

The centre screen also provides a real-time view from the rear camera, with steering guidelines, while the driver instrument binnacle features a multi-information display.
