BMW launches their new 8 Series Coupe
If there’s a list of beloved wedges from the early 1990s, the original (E31) 850 CSi must surely be on it.
Originally mistaken for a successor to the 6 Series coupe (back when numbers made sense), it came with a 12 or 6 cylinder heart. It looked like an attainable M1, in V12 format, had an engine to rival Ferrari and Lamborghini and then there was the pop-up lights. So much more than ‘mere driving pleasure’, the 850 CSi was a status symbol that could shunt.
And now, practically three decades later is back, minus the pop-up lamps and about four cylinders. Instead a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 lives under the acre-long bonnet, one blessed with 390kW and 750Nm. It’s big for sure, but smaller than a 5 Series measuring at 4851mm (length), 1902mm (width) and is just 1346mm tall.
But the metal ducks and dives, a slippery shape that starts at the top with a double-bubble roof, and extends all the way down an organic flank to a square track. Here also lives rear-wheel steer now, to help the driver keep all that grunt pointed along the black stuff – since there is so much in its reserves. But it’s not all go, there’s plenty of show as well – in addition to the exterior niceness, there’s a lavish cabin adorned with leather, tech, toys and plushness.
As far as flagships go, the 8 Series is proving to be a mighty one.
And hot on its heels, the 8 Series Convertible is revealed
Those cheeky Bavarians took the launch of the car above as the perfect opportunity to also unveil this. It’s a decapitated version for the BMW enthusiast who likes their rides massive but also enjoys a bit of wind in their hair.
We reckon a M850i xDrive Convertible would be just the thing for cruising the coast this festive season since it too enjoys the 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 with 390kW and 750Nm.
VW just previewed a Tiguan Bakkie
But before you rush off to the nearest dealership, it’s just a sketch. Also it is meant for Brazil.
But it does look brilliant and there’s really no major reason to believe it won’t make it to Mzansi at some point if there’s big enough demand. It is set to be unveiled at the Sao Paolo Motor Show, rides on VW’s MQB platform and if this illustration is to believed, looks to carry five occupants comfortably. Ha.
Lamborghini took their Urus on a photographic adventure to Iceland
And this is what they came back with. Enjoy! Oh and just a gentle reminder, this is the marque’s super SUV with 478kW and 850Nm from a twin-turbo V8. For the full story and more photos click here.
Porsche just took back their Nurburgring record, with a modified car
This is the Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR, and the last bit is important. It stands for Manthey-Racing – essentially a tuner who in this case tweaked upon a GT2 RS, similar to the factory car that held the record before a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ dethroned it.
This modified car did it in 6.40.3min, with the same engine and indeed power as the standard car – that’s 515kW and 750Nm.
We need to talk about the Dodge Super Charger 1968 Concept
There’s no denying that in the world of pony cars, the original Charger deserves a spot on the podium.
Well this is that, reimagined, and home to what is called the ‘Hellephant’ engine, a 1000 horsepower, supercharged crate 426 Hemi V8 block. It gets the full Mopar treatment which these days includes Fiat products so, 5 inch tailpipes from a, Alfa Romeo Stelvio live here, as does 20 inch Devil hoops from the modern day SRT Hellcat.
But failing all this, just look at the damn thing.
