BMW’s new M5 has launched locally, and it’s 4WD (don’t worry, its switchable) and VERY expensive. New Ford Focus is now in focus (Volvo, you see this?). New Subaru Forester is on the way (STI for us please). And, Volvo wins World Car of the Year Award (against all odds, and all Porsches).

One Liners:

  • The VW Atlas. Or, what’s bigger than an Amarok but shares DNA with a Golf?
  • It’s official, the next Toyota Supra will skip manual drivetrains and go fully automatic.

BMW M5 launched in Mzansi

Kyalami was host to the smoky arrival of BMW’s flagship super saloon and we’re all the better for it. Five 1st Editions have already been snapped up at R2,024,006 so, don’t hold your breathe. That leaves us with the rest of the ‘range’ including a standard car at R1,762,806 (including 15% VAT and CO2 tax). For your tons of cash you now get 4WD (gasp! Don’t worry, you can switch that off dear purist), a 4.4litre V8 blessed with 441kW and 750Nm and all the noise you’d ever need from a car. Joy!

Ford Focus teased ahead of official unveiling

Headlamps scream “I’m not quite over my relationship with Volvo”. No really, it’s 75% Thor’s hammer – you see it too right? This car has in any case been one of the worst kept secrets in the industry with completely uncovered images from photoshoots having leaked onto social media. Just get on with it, Ford.

New Subaru Forester

This is it, the fifth generation Forester, the choice of ornithologists the world over. That is, unless you’ve selected the STI version, which you shouldn’t as it’ll chase the birds away.  Instead opt for a friendly diesel and you’ll have bought yourself one of the least offensive SUVs on any market. The Forry has an almost cult-like following to those who’ve been initiated, and this latest one, now built on the Subaru Global Platform, will surely continue the trend with updates where it matters. That’s more grunt, more practicality and just a nip and a tuck for some 2019 rejuvenation. We’ll take ours in green, with brown interior.

Volvo XC60 wins World Car of the Year Award

Ok, so this is more like the American Car of the Year, but if local media is to believed then we can only assume that’s a country bereft of Porsches. Fine, we’re teasing – but we can’t ignore the fact that the second coming of the XC60 is an acclaimed machine, nor that its little sibling the incoming XC40 has managed to achieve a similar feat in Europe. Volvo, you’re looking real Swede.
