Let's just skip to the crib notes, shall we?
There’s a 620 kilometer range. Four motors, that's one per wheel for adaptive four wheel drive. A jeep-like wading depth of 3 feet and a sprint from nought to one hundred kays in a supercar-like 3 seconds flat. And of course, zero emissions.
And then there's the way it looks, in a word - futuristic. From the cutesy sentient visage to that absurdly clean aesthetic, carried over into a cabin that favours touchscreens and minimalism.
It's not all flash and wallop, there's some practical thinking gone into it too. Such as the Gear Tunnel, essentially a hollowed groove that will allow you to store things that normally would not fit into such a thing. There's a full size spare wheel embedded in the load bin out of sight, and as for capabilities it can carry 800kg or tow 5 tons.
“The beauty and elegance of our quad-motor setup isn’t just about brute power. This architecture provides instantaneous torque with extremely precise control at each wheel.” explains engineering director Mark Vinnels.
And if you're imagining it around the size of a Nissan Navara you'd be almost right, it is in fact marginally larger all round. It rides on double wishbones upfront and a multilink rear independent suspension. It features self-driving (on and off road) and we want one, we really do.
“I started Rivian to deliver products that the world didn’t already have,” explains Rivian boss RJ Scaringe. “Starting with a clean sheet, we have spent years developing the technology to deliver the ideal vehicle for active customers.”
