Toyota’s getting TRD versions of their trucks, Ford’s famously deployed the Raptor nameplate and even Nissan are looking at a fierier Navara. Mitsubishi then, previously purveyors of Ralliart and Evo have just gifted their Triton double cab some much-needed venom.
The result is this, the Triton Athlete with its racier styling, a vinyl sticker kit and some extra safety kit but that’s about it. You see, at R559,995 it matches the regular 4x4 automatic model and shares its Mivec 2.4 litre diesel (133kW and 430Nm), 5-speed auto and the brand’s 4WD system dubbed Super-Select II. But, plot twist! The rest of the range just got their prices slashed massively. We’re talking about R70k less on two-wheel drive models and R80k off the prices of their 4x4s. The discounts are reportedly so infectious they’ve spread to certain ASX and Pajero models as well, so that’s nice.
As an example, this means you can now pick up a very capable doublecab with 4x4, a torquey 2.4 litre diesel and manual transmission for just R459,995. That’s just staggering. Pay the full price of admission however for the Athlete and you’ll have a very attractive, well-appointed flagship imported from Thailand, riding on diamon-cut 17” inch alloys with all the butch styling addenda you could ask for including the aforementioned vinyls, a sporty bull bar, tailgate spoiler and black mouldings. You can have it in any colour as long as its grey or white and oh boy, do we hope you like the colour orange as its been lavishly applied to the seats.
That safety ramping we mentioned earlier means the Athlete comes with seven airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Stability Control with Traction Control as well as Hill-Start Assist and Isofix points for child seats. Lastly, towing capability has been raised to 3.1 tons. It comes with Mitsubishi’s 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/90 000 km. Service intervals are set at 10 000 km. All things considered, that’s a lot of lifestyle bakkie.
