Lusty Tiguan R Joins VW SUV Range

The Tiguan R joins Volkswagen’s T SUV range in South Africa, which currently consists of the T-Cross, Taigo, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg.

‘To a T’ as the saying goes, and the Tiguan R, in this case, is the most powerful SUV Volkswagen has launched locally.


Power output is 235 kW, propelling the SUV to 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds and on to a top speed of 250 km/h, all the while keeping its composure with permanent all-wheel drive and maximum torque of 400 Nm from 2 100 r/min.

The all-wheel-drive system is new – 4MOTION with R-Performance Torque Vectoring, which is also available in the new Golf 8 R.

Additional equipment includes an 18-inch brake system with blue brake callipers and a DCC chassis with adaptively controlled shock absorbers - lowered by 10 mm. A driving profile selection is enhanced for the Tiguan R with an additional R profile and separate large paddles for manual control of the 7-speed DSG gearbox.


Exterior features of the new Tiguan R include bumpers in ‘R’ design, exterior mirror covers in matt chrome, a high-gloss black rear diffuser, black wheel housing extensions, 20-inch Misano alloy wheels, Lights and Vision Package, panoramic sunroof, and Park Distance Control (front and rear).

The interior gets Nappa leather seats with an ‘R’ logo, a customised Digital Cockpit with an integrated lap timer, and a Carbon Grey decorative trim. 

Additional standard features include the Discover Pro system with satellite navigation, Wireless App-Connec, Voice Control and Keyless Entry with safe lock and an electric tailgate and luggage compartment and the panoramic sunroof.


The Tiguan R comes standard with a 3-year/120 000 km warranty, 5-year/ 100 000 km EasyDrive Maintenance Plan and a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000 km.
