Lamborghini Urus National Reveal in Cape Town

Today, in a swish new Century City dealership, we witnessed the awaited local reveal of the new Lamborghini Urus That’s a R3.5 million SUV from a company with its origins in a rural village somewhere in Italy. How far they’ve come.

To me, Lamborghini isn’t a car company. They’re a poster company. Everyone touched by the affliction of petrolheadiness has had a Countach or a Diablo on their walls growing up. The Urus then is more LM002 (Google it) than either of the aforementioned gods of aerodynamics – so probably won’t be adorning my 17 year old’s wall.

There’s no V12 here, not even a V10. Rather a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 under that shiny bonnet, and with it 485kW and 850Nm. That makes for a 3.6 second 0-100kph time and a max speed of 305kph which is great for something with a bull on its nose, packing seating for more than two – the first time those haven’t been mutually exclusive for decades.

More about Lamborghini

The company is in rude health for the first time in decades, with a 10% increase in sales worldwide, an 11% increase in turnover at 1 Billion Euro, so that’s nice. That’s just with a V10 and its V12 sibling, the Huracan and Aventador respectively – let’s see what a people mover does to their bottom line. Still on the subject of growth, they’ve doubled the Sant’Agata plant to 160,000m2 now with 500 new employees, sending out their groovy whips to 150 dealer in 50 countries. Again, not bad for a little village export.

The future of Lamborghini remains youthful and aspirational, but are committed to making their super sports cars more innovative by embracing hybridisation and electrification. They’re quick to point to the Terzo Millenia concept car as their future. A ‘year 3000’ machine of pure fantasy which uses its every surface to generate power (solar, magic, that sort of stuff), and be self-repairable via nano technology.

Now that. That’s going on my wall.

Chairman and CEO of Automobil Lamborghini Stefano Domenicali had this to say about the event;

“We are excited to open our first new corporate identity showroom in the Middle East / Africa region in the beautiful city of Cape Town. With the launch of the Urus, we are expecting growth in this part of the world and it is important that our dealers reflect the direction of the brand through their facilities and customer service.”

Looks like local LSM Distributors are poised to deliver on that promise.
