Hyundai's quirky 1+2 door coupe receives a healthy dose of Turbo power taking peak power to 150kW and max torque to 265Nm.

“More power” is about the only criticism which could be levelled at the Hyundai Veloster by those in the industry. After all it has a wonderful, sporty profile and a quirky three-door layout carving itself a firm niche in the market. Perhaps too niche, seeing that in the UK the funky Veloster has already been dropped from Hyundai UK’s line-up.

That is a shame, but not too worry because South African’s can still enjoy the Veloster’s charms on local roads. And for those that begged Hyundai to add more power, your prayers have been answered with the introduction of the Veloster Turbo.

Powered by the group’s 1.6 T-GDI unit, the new Veloster Turbo gains an impressive 47kW and 98Nm extra over the bog-standard model, bumping power and torque to 150kW and 265Nm respectively. You asked and Hyundai delivered!

Maximizing fuel efficiency and performance, the Veloster Turbo’s engine has an air-guided intercooler, direct fuel injection system and dual CVVT and is also fitted with a quicker-ratio steering rack and a revised steering calibration to match, which provide for precise cornering, feedback and control.  As with the turbocharged engine, the front and rear suspension set-ups have been tuned to match the expectations of drivers that appreciate firm and surefooted road manners.

In order to handle the extra torque, the six-speed manual, which is developed in house by Hyundai, has received a wider gear ratio spread. With a R20 000.00 premium over the manual, buyers can also spec a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox which of course features requisite steering wheel mounted shift paddles.

To ensure Veloster Turbo has confident stopping ability to match its increased power, the ventilated front brake discs have been enlarged by 20 mm (300 mm) relative to the standard car.

The Turbo model has the same practical appeal as the original model, thanks to the innovative 1+2 door design. It also now features unique front and rear bumpers and fog lights, a new rear spoiler and grille, new 18-inch alloy wheels, projection headlights with unique LED headlight accents, and unique LED taillights.

Inside, new full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks help deliver a unique look while providing exceptional support and comfort. An exclusive Supervision gauge cluster feeds the driver information in a larger, clearer, and more interactive format by way of two TFT screens located between the tachometer and speedometer.
