Calvin Fisher gets nostalgic about the French manufacturer's return.

I'm a Citroën fan. I had the good fortune of running a C5 saloon for a year, and the first car I've ever reviewed internationally was the C3. So, it holds a sentimental value for sure, but critically – they’re all good characterful cars, and I wished them better success.

As you can imagine I was sad to see them leave the country – but I was aware of the challenge the marque was facing. Conversely, I’m relieved to see them return – and wow, what an offensive. They’re clearly cross.

I mean Aircross, mostly – with the full complement of rubbery and dark-plastic addenda, the brand clearly realising the appeal that compact SUV types garner among buyers. Three models, two derivatives apiece.

Starting at the bottom, they’ve released the latest version of the C3 B-Segment tyke. Think Gallic Polo from R240k and up and you’ll get the idea. Then there’s the stilted derivative with the C3 Aircross for R100k dearer – this isn’t a ‘Stepway’ style job, rather a genuinely larger model – practically C Segment. Lastly, the flagship – the C5 Aircross for R469,900 for the Feel 1.6 THP trim level, or R509,900 for the Shine 1.6 THP.

All of them represent a stylish and well-appointed, feature-laden techno-hatch cum SUV with plenty of charisma from the quirkiest of car makers. Keep on doing you Citroen, you crazy, brilliant, elegant car maker, you.
