Open-top hooliganism has arrived in South Africa in the form of the new BMW M4 Convertible. Hair dresser vibes meets hard-core power slides as this drop-top version of BMWs iconic M performance car replicates the performance figures of its tin-top siblings.

Apart from the three-section folding roof, which can opens in 20 seconds and up to speeds of 18km/h, the convertible M4 is mechanically identical to the hard-top version. Powered by the now familiar turbo-charged in-line 6-cylinder which generates a maximum output of 317 kW from its 3.0-litre displacement and 550 Nm. 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched with in just 4.4 seconds (insert hairdresser joke here).

Like the BMW M3 and M4, the convertible also displays a strict adherence to the intelligent lightweight construction principle. Bonnet and front side panels are made from aluminium, as are many components of the chassis. Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic is employed for the drive shaft and front strut brace in the engine compartment, further reducing weight.

Available at launch is the M Drivers Package, which allows owners to increase the top speed of their new convertible from 250km/h to 305km/h.
