The new BMW M2 Competition Package of course, seen here at pace like a
scalded cobra featuring numbers that are frankly alarming. There's that
familiar TwinPower turbo charged 3.0 litre six cylinder engine derived
from the larger M3 and M4, here churning out 302kW and 550Nm. It has a
0-100kph sprint time of 4.2 seconds with the sporty M DCT auto, 4.4
seconds if you choose to swap your own cogs via the six speed manual -
still the purists choice. Both are capable of punching the horizon at a
top speed of 250kph, which with the option of an M Driver's Package can
be extended to 280kph.
Desirability levels? Through the roof. The
M2, especially when had in three-pedal format remains an almost
analogue experience in a world all the more dominated with four driven
wheels.
Fuel consumption, if you care, is sub ten at 9.9l/100km
for the manual and 9.2l/100km in the DCT with a similar decrease in
carbon emissions from 228 to 209 grams per kilometre. But it's the
motorsport derived enhancements that matter most here, such as the oil
and cooling gubbins that have been upgraded to accommodate the new
performance.
Even some of the aesthetics are for the sake of the
pursuit of speed, such as the wider kidney grilles and aero along the
frontal aspect allowing more cool air. It's also great to finally see
the traditional double-arm side mirrors at last on the M2.
Furthermore
there's a veritable raft of technology here to ensure the hottest 2
Series ever remains a manageable steer. And on that note the helm will
continue to be a precise and engaging experience thanks to an even more
rigid front axle. Everywhere else it's upgrade city, from the forged
19-inch wheels to the brakes.
Never has 'shut up and take my money' been a more appropriate tag. We'll have ours in grey. I mean Hockenheim Silver.
