Ah yes, the Dakar Rally, that ultimate off road cross-country race, one that was deemed too wild for the actual Dakar region and was promptly relocated to South America instead. Where it has once again been deemed too wild and will possibly see a return to Africa – right then.
It’s an unforgiving adventure that some don’t survive, and one where the Toyota Hilux has seen a fair amount of success, most recently with a South African team including one Giniel De Villiers. Here he is now, piloting the new flagship special edition, yours for R662,700. (Watch the video above)
Mind you that’s the petrol-swigging 4.0 litre V6 4x4 with 175kW and 376Nm, but if you’d like your Dakar brandishings on something more reasonable, you can do so as cheaply as R535,000. That’s on a manual-transmission 130kW/420Nm 2.7 GD-6 turbodiesel RB, but there’s an auto (with an extra 30Nm) for R553,400 as well. And if you absolutely must have 4x4 then it’s yours at R601,100 again in manual, R621,000 for the more torquey automatic model.
They all benefit from Dakar accouterments such as that Tacoma-styled nose and the usual Dakar sticker kit, plus Raider spec levels with added leather trim and Satnav as standard. Raider spec also entails touch screen audio with reverse camera, automatic climate control, stability plus traction and sway control.
Nice! We predict they’ll sell loads.
